        The world is a strange place that we all cohabitate with one another, even stranger than the world that we occupy may be the ever-occurring attraction and questions we have about love. The simple four-letter word is one that is undeniably unexplainable and cannot be defined in any one context.  “Before love or even the inkling of a relationship, there is attraction, that unexplained magnetism that draws people together, possibly leading to love,” according to Sharon Jayson of USA Today. Experts have toyed with the idea of shedding some light on the dark reality of what love is and where it comes from. Helen Fisher has categorized “four types of love,” such as Builder, Explorer, Director and negotiator. To classify yourself in to any given category can be difficult, due to that we tend to incorporate a piece of each category into our daily lives depending on our given moods and attitudes at that time.

            To best classify myself into any given category, I would have to take on the explorer role. In life I tend to direct myself towards anything that happens to me new and different. My past relationships paint a picture of a hard to follow no clear direction of my relationship preference. It tends to jump around a make sort of an abstract mess of connections come and gone. This description pushes me to realize that I am always looking for something bigger and better, which I don’t consider a bad thing. New experiences stimulate the mind and body, which I find to increase motivation in other aspects of life.

            I strongly agree that society plays a vital role in the relationship development and mate selection. The mass media plays a crucial role in showing us how and what a “healthy” relationship looks like.  Media feeds us how men and women should look and further than that they show us how one another should act.  I believe that media has influenced my way of thinking when it comes to relationships; I do enjoy the women that are paraded around on television like cattle, and tend to look for that in a typical mate. I don’t consider this a bad thing, I think everyone has their own preference even though it may have been manifested by mass media. Everyone has their own different opinions and as long as it makes them and the people they become involved with happy I see no problem in that.

            My relationship and mate selection has been constructed from an early age of always appreciating the typical model beauty of what entertainment offers us. I suppose my oldest memory of this would have to be around the time of the peak of Baywatch, Pamela Anderson was all the rage. So this was quite the defining moment in my development of picking a mate.
